Furniture beetle dust. Three groups of wood-boring beetles—powderpost, deathwatch, and false powderpost ()—invade and damage wood furniture as well as structural and decorative wood inside of buildings.The beetle larvae feed in and do most of the damage to wood, and when they reach the adult stage, they emerge through round exit holes, which they create by chewing through the wood surface. There are two defining characteristics of powderpost beetle infestations. It is typical to get this beetle after kiln drying, not in green wood or in air dried wood. Apparently we have some sort of powderpost beetle in at least two of the shelves.
Many times the Powderpost Beetle (Lyctidae) enters lumber that is stored or cured. Powderpost beetles are a group of seventy species of woodboring beetles classified in the insect subfamily Lyctinae. When eating, they drill deep into the wood, creating wood dust and when leaving, they make exit holes, all of which damages furniture, flooring, and wood frames.
I sent it back for repairs and then the furniture store told me it had "bugs". True Powder Powderpost Beetles breed in dead and dried hardwoods such as the dead branches and limbs of trees. You can even have dust mites in bed and have a grain mite infestation in your pantry.
Adult Anobium punctatum measure 2.7–4.5 millimetres (0.11–0.18 in) in length. They have brown ellipsoidal bodies with a prothorax resembling a monk's cowl . The PPB in furniture cannot be controlled with chemicals, as the insect is deep within the wood and any chemicals stay at or near the surface.
