Pyemotes ventricosus, a parasite of the furniture beetle Anobium punctatum, was the cause of this condition. Adult Anobium punctatum measure 2.7–4.5 millimetres (0.11–0.18 in) in length. Other wood-infesting pests are old house borers and carpenter bees.

The adult furniture carpet beetles live 4 to 8 weeks. Powderpost beetles can be serious pests of structures. The term ‘Woodworm’ actually refers to the larvae of wood-boring beetles.
Like other species of carpet beetles, it is able to digest keratin, the principal protein found in animal hair and feathers. Larva are the stage which cause all the damage. It attacks these wide-pored hardwoods because the female beetle is able to fit her eggs into these pores.
